Page information:
Between 21-29th September, Fergus and I are going for a bit of a walk through the Swiss hills. Again. Seeing as during a previous challenge trying to get up Mont Blanc everyone was so generous in sponsoring us, we wanted to support two of our favourite causes this time.
Firstly, we rather like and admire the wonderful folks over at Kids of Africa, and so we have decided to fundraise for them again. KoA is a fabulous Ugandan orphanage founded by Burkhard Varnholt, with whom Nick used to work.
Secondly, we spend a lot of time in the mountains in both summer and winter, and have both come croppers of varying severity at various times (Nick is particularly accident-prone - some might say both rather malco-ordinated and mad. Check the photo gallery for evidence of this...) This being the case, the Rega Air Ambulance rescue service seems an apt cause to support. Not just those living in Switzerland, but anyone visiting could have cause to be grateful for them.
So, please, particularly if you like the idea of two (slightly) rotund chaps walking their hooves into the ground, sponsor us as generously as you can.
Many thanks!
Nick, Fergus and Neil
The Challenge:
A 150 km A-Z hike through the Swiss (and Italian) mountains
Date: 21-29th September
Location: Andermatt - Zermatt
More details: After having decided that trying to climb Mont Blanc was not quite far enough, Fergus, Neil and I decided to attempt an "A-Z" hike. In this case this means a wee one week dash from one of our favourite ski areas to another, namely from Andermatt (canton Uri) to Zermatt (canton Wallis). Sadly without the skis of course.
This 150km stroll involves an average distance per day of around 21.5km (13.3 miles, or a half marathon) with around 1300m (4,2565 ft) vertical (both up and down...). It's basically sea level to above Everest and back.
We will stay below the snowline this time (unless the weather really takes a dislike to us), so we can leave ropes, crampons, harnesses behind this time, to lighten packs and enable to travel at a reasonable speed.
We have been doing training hikes throughout the summer, starting with a mere 11km and raising the stakes from there. So far we have encountered broken lifts, overenthusiastic bovines, non-existent trails, leeches, snow, unusually high temperatures and more cow, sheep and deer manure than is really fair. We have also both now destroyed our previous hiking boots, and have bought the rest of the annual production run of Compeed.
For the route details, times, distances etc. please look on the blog page.
Funds collected are delivered to the beneficiary charity
